On Monday evening, we will be boarding a plane to Edmonton. We are excited for more reasons than one. I’ve never been to Alberta before, so I can cross one more province off the list (that leaves only Newfoundland). Also, we are going on behalf of our congregation, who have graciously provided this trip through individual, out-of-budget givings.
There isn’t really room for much else besides attending the conference. I preach the Sunday before, and Ana plays organ the Sunday after, so it worked best for us to spend as little time there as possible. Those times also happened to be the cheapest flights, which helped. Even when I’m spending other people’s money, I can’t stand to over spend, which is also why we opted out of the supper portion of the conference meal plan. There is some time set aside for site-seeing, which we will do, and I’m still trying to convince Ana to accompany me to the Eskimos-Lions CFL game (which we’d pay for ourselves). Otherwise we will be enjoying the hotel pool, meeting other Mennonite Church Canada folk, and trying to use some of the time to work on our musical (a few scenes to go on the rough draft).
So if anyone else will be in the area around the same time, July 3-8, or if you have suggestions on dining or entertaining while we’re there, let us know.

why?
why would you go to *THAT* city? There’s a perfectly good city 3 hours down the QEII highway… You can’t even see the mountains from *THAT* city…
Great that you get to come experience *some* of Alberta. Any chance you’ll be able to take a day trip to Jasper or Banff at all? It would be worth it, trust me.
If nothing else: welcome to the province of 6% TOTAL tax (well, as of tomorrow, of course).

There aren’t any city-to-city rivalries in Ontario like exists between Edmonton and Calgary, but we can still understand where you’re coming from Kirk. We, as the rest of Ontario, are also embarassed of our provincial capital. What with their … well you understand, you hate Toronto too.
It’s killing me that all I get to experience of Alberta is within the city limits of Edmonton. To see the mountains would be awesome, to see Banff, Jasper etc. of course would be nice, and a big part of me wants to go to Calgary, see the Stampede, and come back to Ontario with a new Stetson and a big ole belt buckle. That thought provides some consolation to Ana though, that she is somehow gaining by not getting out of the city, at least by containing me to the city limits.

Well, you’ve got plenty of life left to live (well, at least we hope)… You can always come back
Definitely get yourself a hat (Lammles is a great store for that). Go to West Edmonton Mall for sure (be forewarned, it can take like half a day to just *walk* the mall, much less *shop*). There are two Lammles in West Ed… If you can hit West Ed in the middle of the week, bring your swimsuits. Don’t go to the waterpark on the weekend…
